Italian Livestock Guard Dogs

The following pages are just a few snapshots of what you should look for in a typical livestock guard dog. In general, they need to be dependable and trustworthy with the stock. Just as important, they should possess a mild temperament and never show aggression toward humans. Although they can make wonderful family pets, they do not adapt well to Urban lifestyles. These are large dogs that need a lot of space. They are by nature a very territorial creature and it is their tendency to guard whatever "stock" they are raised with. It is extremely important not to over socialize them as a pup if they are to be going to be used solely for guarding livestock. And it is essential to introduce them to the stock at a very early age in order to develop their full potential as a livestock guardian. Doing so will allow them to bond with the animals rather than with people. This is by far the hardest part in owning a Maremma, because they are such lovable and affectionate dogs.
